Mumbai: BMC Begins Reconstruction of Sion and Belasis Flyovers; Commissioner Reviews Progress

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken the reconstruction of two major flyovers — the Sion (Shiv) flyover, which connects the eastern and western parts of Sion, and the Belasis flyover, which connects Tardeo to Nagpada and Mumbai Central Station. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar visited both project sites on June 23 to independently review their progress.

During the visit, a plan was discussed to identify tasks that can be carried out simultaneously to ensure the timely completion of both flyovers. The work on the railway portions of the flyovers will be handled by the railway department, while the approach road work will be carried out by the BMC.

Bangar emphasised the need for close coordination between the two agencies to meet the deadlines. He also instructed that careful planning be done to identify tasks that can be executed in parallel, so as to avoid any wastage of time.

He further directed the concerned railway and BMC officials to focus on improving traffic movement for the public's convenience and to prioritise both the pace and quality of construction. Special attention should be paid to ensuring that citizens are not inconvenienced during the reconstruction process, and both the railway administration and the BMC must take responsibility for this.

To streamline the ongoing work, all concerned departments within the BMC should work in close coordination. Pending issues should be resolved urgently through mutual cooperation, Bangar added.
