The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday carried out an extensive demolition drive in Amar Nagar and Khindipada, Mulund, removing 234 unauthorised residential and commercial structures that were obstructing the progress of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project.
The action was undertaken by the T Ward's encroachment removal team as part of efforts to speed up work on the 12.20-kilometre corridor, a major infrastructure project designed to enhance east-west connectivity across Mumbai and reduce travel time between the city's suburbs.
According to civic officials, a total of 384 structures in Amar Nagar and Khindipada had been identified as encroachments affecting the project. Around 150 of these structures were demolished during a previous operation conducted last week, while the remaining 234 were cleared during Friday's drive.
The demolition operation was supervised by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Zone 6 and led by Assistant Municipal Commissioner Yogita Kolhe. The civic body deployed a large workforce, including 10 municipal engineers, approximately 100 BMC personnel, and 150 private workers, to execute the action.
Heavy machinery, including two Poclain excavators, four JCB machines, and ten dumpers, was used during the operation. To maintain law and order, around 50 police personnel from Mulund Police Station, under the leadership of Senior Police Inspector Ajay Joshi, were deployed at the site.
The BMC stated that the demolition forms a crucial part of the land-clearing process required for the timely execution of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project. The corridor, which will feature roads, underground tunnels, flyovers, and related infrastructure, is being developed in four phases.
Officials noted that removing the encroachments will help accelerate construction work and pave the way for improved traffic flow between Mumbai's eastern and western suburbs. Once completed, the GMLR is expected to significantly ease congestion on existing road networks and provide a faster, more efficient travel route across the city.
