BMC to Upgrade EEH and WEH with Advanced Road Technology and Bridge Repairs To Fix Potholes

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a major road repair project for the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and Western Express Highway (WEH). The goal is to fix potholes and improve road conditions before the monsoon season.

As per a report by FPJ, the plan is worth INR 164.94 crore. Earlier, in December, the civic body had planned an INR 130 crore project for repairing damaged stretches on both highways. The new proposal expands the scope of work and cost. It will be placed before the Standing Committee for approval.

The BMC will use micro-surfacing technology on the main carriageways of EEH and WEH. This method will reduce surface damage and improve driving comfort. A separate allocation of INR 77.14 crore is presented for EEH improvements.

The Western Express Highway will also undergo major resurfacing work. An amount of INR 87.80 crore is set aside for it. The highway was transferred to the BMC from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on October 3, 2022. It was handed over in an “as-is-where-is” condition.

After that, the BMC has been maintaining the roads. Every year, tenders are issued for patch repairs in different sections. Similar tenders were also issued last year and will continue next year for maintenance work. On the Western Express Highway, bridges such as Dattapada, Vakola, Aarey, National Park, and Rawal Pada are also being repaired with mastic asphalt.

Repair work is also being carried out on several key bridges and junctions before the monsoon. On EEH and connected roads, mastic asphalt is being used for repairs. These locations include Kurla Bridge, Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, Cheda Nagar, Ghatkopar, Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, Vikhroli, and Airoli Junction.
