MMRDA's jurisdiction to include parts of Palghar, Raigad district

Both the houses of Maharashtra Legislature on Thursday cleared a proposal to expand the jurisdiction of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMRD). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presented the proposal in the state legislative council to add parts of Palghar and Raigad districts under Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Earlier, the Maharashtra cabinet had taken a decision to expand MMRDA’s jurisdiction by 2,000 sq km to cover parts of Palghar, Kalyan, Vasai, Thane, Pen, Khalapur, Bhiwandi and Alibaug. The extension will allow MMRDA to invest and give a boost to infrastructure projects in these areas.

CM Fadnavis said that the MMRDA funds should be utilised beyond Mumbai and Thane. Along with the plan to construct metro and monorail in these areas, the MMRDA will also work towards facilitating basic infrastructure work.

The Chief Minister further informed that MMRDA is not a bank and they have taken the decision to expand MMRDA’s jurisdiction in order to initiate major infra works.
