Marine Drive to get first major face-lift after a decade

It has been a long time since Mumbai’s favourite tourist destination Marine drive got a makeover. As a part of ₹32 lakh project, the heritage promenade is scheduled for a renovation and the work starts next week. The project will be undertaken by the BMC.

What is to be covered?

• Anti-skid tiles will be redone from the places where they have loosened up, or seem to be hanging dangerously
• More stone benches will be added along the promenade
• 42 manholes, that are no longer in use, will be covered
• A toilet on the promenade will be refurbished

What else?

The BMC is planning to build a stone seating area along the ramp of Nariman Point. This will help in creating additional seating space at the southern end of the promenade. An official said the plan is being discussed for its feasibility. Local corporator Harshita Narwekar said that the BMC is also looking at some beautification work done, besides improvements. Steel furniture, like steel benches between the trees, is also on the cards.

Emphasising the importance of maintaining the area, Atul Kumar of Nariman Point Churchgate Citizens' Association said that the project will greatly benefit the public.

Assistant civic commissioner Kiran Dighavkar said work on improving the promenade was planned for long and now, it should start next week.
