The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed around 90% of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project, which will feature India's first travelator-equipped skywalk linking Metro Line 3, the Mumbai Monorail and the suburban railway network.
The INR 60-crore project will connect the Mahalaxmi Metro Line 3 station, Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail station, and Mahalaxmi suburban railway station, enabling seamless transfers between the three transport systems. Once operational, the integrated skywalk is expected to reduce passenger interchange time by nearly 20 minutes.
The 283-metre-long, 11-metre-wide elevated walkway will be equipped with six travelators spanning 176 metres and two passenger lifts to improve accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and travellers carrying luggage. The facility is designed to handle around 4,500 passengers per hour.
Construction began in mid-2023, and officials said the project is in its final phase, with commissioning expected after the remaining work and safety checks are completed.
