The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued tenders worth INR 2,200 crore for new infrastructure projects in the western suburbs. The plan includes building a new traffic arm of the upcoming Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which will connect Versova and Bhayandar. It also covers two new bridges to improve connectivity.
One of the major works under this tender is the Lagoon Road bridge. This bridge will connect Malad (West) with Lagoon Road at the back of Andheri. The alignment will begin behind Infinity Mall in Malad and extend to Andheri Back Road. It will cross the Poisar River and a section of mangroves.
At present, there is no direct road between Malad and Andheri, which are 12 kilometres apart. Motorists currently rely on Link Road, SV Road, or the Western Express Highway.
The second bridge will connect Ryan International School in Kandivali East with MDP Road. In addition to this, a new traffic arm will be built to link Malad’s busy Marve route with the future coastal road. This road segment is known for heavy traffic during the day.
As part of the same plan, the BMC will also widen the Malad Marve road between Mahakali Junction and Charkop Naka in Kandivali.
As per a report by the Indian Express, North Mumbai MP Piyush Goyal said these projects are with the Mumbai Coastal Road, expected to open in the coming years. He added that regular reviews have helped speed up projects that were earlier delayed.
