Time-Bound Airport Expansion and Greenfield Projects Prioritised in Maharashtra

A renewed emphasis on aviation-led infrastructure growth has been placed in Maharashtra, where directives have been issued to ensure that airport development projects are completed within clearly defined timelines. The acceleration of new greenfield airport proposals has been prioritised, particularly in the Vadhvan–Virar belt of Palghar district.

During the 93rd board meeting of the Maharashtra Airport Development Company held in Mumbai, the strategic importance of integrated infrastructure planning was underlined. It was highlighted that the proposed Vadhvan port, anticipated to be among the largest in Asia, would require robust and seamless connectivity across road, rail and air networks. The necessity of synchronising port expansion with aviation infrastructure was strongly emphasised, as it was indicated that economic gains from the maritime project would depend on efficient logistical support systems.

As part of this broader vision, directions were issued for the early identification of land suitable for a new greenfield airport in the Vadhvan–Virar coastal region. It was conveyed that preparatory work should be advanced without delay to align aviation development with upcoming industrial and port-related activities. At the same time, the expansion and modernisation of existing airports were reviewed, and it was stated that these projects should be executed in a structured and time-bound manner.

Attention was also drawn to Gadchiroli district, where industrial activity is steadily expanding. It was announced that a greenfield airport would be developed in the district to support its transformation into a steel and manufacturing hub. The requirement for modern aviation infrastructure was justified on the grounds of rising logistics demands and increasing passenger movement associated with industrial growth.

Progress updates were presented regarding operational airports in Nanded, Sindhudurg and Nagpur. In addition, a comprehensive overview of nine airport development initiatives across Maharashtra was shared, reflecting a statewide approach to strengthening regional air connectivity.

Significant focus was placed on the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN). A total allocation of ₹597 crore has been approved for its development, with ₹297 crore already disbursed. Various projects are currently underway at MIHAN, including the establishment of industrial units, educational institutions, commercial spaces, healthcare facilities, a dedicated cargo hub and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

It was concluded that the enhancement of airport networks and industrial ecosystems would contribute substantially to increased investment inflows, job creation and balanced regional development. Through coordinated infrastructure expansion, Maharashtra’s position as a leading economic hub is expected to be further consolidated.
