The decision is being seen as a politically important move ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Shiv Sena, who is in alliance with BJP, did not object to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' decision.

The decision to bring Vasai, Alibaug, Khalapur, Panvel and Palghar under the MMRDA will increase its area by 2,000 sq km.
