With local body elections in Maharashtra likely to be announced soon, preparations are underway, including updating voter lists and redrawing municipal wards. The Urban Development Department has directed all municipal corporations and councils to submit ward structures to the State Election Commission, prompting full-scale groundwork.
The last Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election was held in February 2017, and the corporators' term ended in March 2022. It has now been three and a half years since the term ended and eight and a half years since the last election.
In this time, Mumbai’s population and voter base have grown significantly. During the 2017 BMC Elections, there were around 91 lakh registered voters. By the November 2024 assembly elections, the count had risen to 1 crore 2 lakh 29 thousand 708.

The State Election Commission has mandated that the voter list as of July 1, 2025, be used for the upcoming elections. Given the continued registration, this number is expected to grow even further.
