The Bombay High Court has stayed the bail granted to Shiv Sena councillor Ramesh Mhatre in connection with the alleged assault on doctors and healthcare staff at a civic hospital in Dombivli, citing the seriousness of the incident and concerns over the lower court's decision.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad kept the Kalyan court's July 14 bail order in abeyance until further orders. The High Court took suo motu cognisance of the case after reports of the assault triggered widespread public outrage.
The court directed Mhatre, who had already been released on bail, to surrender before the police by the stipulated deadline. The remaining accused, who are already in judicial custody, will continue to remain behind bars pending further proceedings.
The incident occurred at the KDMC-run Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli, where Mhatre and his supporters allegedly assaulted doctors and hospital staff following a dispute over the treatment of a pregnant patient. The attack sparked protests by the medical community, with the Indian Medical Association initially calling for a statewide strike before suspending it after the High Court's intervention.
