Independent MLA Bacchu Kadu was detained by Mumbai police on Thursday during a protest while demanding to declare drought in Maharashtra.

Along with Kadu, hundreds of workers belonging to the Prahar Janshakti Party were also detained by the police. The farmers intended to protest outside Raj Bhavan to press their demand before the Governor. However, they were detained at Nariman Point.

With the imposition of President’s rule in Maharashtra, the Governor is the only figure of authority to take effective decisions.

Talking to the media, Bacchu Kadu said that they want Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to declare drought in the state and should announce financial assistance along with loan waiver for the farmers.

This movement will continue if our demands are not met,” asserted Bacchu Kadu.

Currently, the crops of thousands of farmers in several districts of western and northern Maharashtra were damaged due to untimely rains. Several crops including onions, paddy, maize among others were destroyed.

Earlier, due to the drought situation in parts of Maharashtra, the farmers and their crops were affected. A large number of farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra in the past few years.

Given the situation of farmers in the state, the political parties in Maharashtra promised complete loan waiver to provide relief to the farmers. However, due to the political deadlock in Maharashtra, the farmers are suffering as the government formation has been stalled.

Bachchu Kadu, the Prahar Janshakti Party head who won the last month's state polls from Achalpur in Amravati district, led the march to raise concern over various problems of cultivators, including non-payment of crop insurance, loan waiver and crop damage due to the recent unseasonal rains.
