Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam on Thursday said that his party will commit a "mistake" if it joins hands with Shiv Sena to form the government in Maharashtra.

While talking to the media, Nirupam said that it would be disastrous for the Congress to join the Shiv Sena-led government while stating that allying with Sena is like burying the Congress.

Congress will be the number 3 party in a Shiv Sena-led government which is like burying the grand old party. Congress has not been able to stand up again in Uttar Pradesh after its alliance with Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP)," said Sanjay Nirupam.

Nirupam's statement comes amid the NCP and Congress leaders in Delhi have nearly finalised the government formation with Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

The political deadlock in Maharashtra still remains as no party has been able to form the government in the state. Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had denied the offer to form the government citing that they don't have the numbers.

BJP and Shiv Sena headed for a tussle after the declaration of assembly election results in Maharashtra over power-sharing which led to Sena's exit from National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

On Thursday evening, NCP and Congress leaders from Maharashtra held a meeting for almost three hours at NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s residence in Delhi.

Senior NCP and Congress leaders, Nawab Malik and Prithviraj Chavan told the media that they had a positive discussion and a stable government will be formed in Maharashtra soon.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena had called all its MLAs for a key meeting on November 22 to Matoshree in Mumbai. It is likely that NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena will have a final meeting to finalise the government formation in Maharashtra.
