State govt clears draft bill of Journalists Protection Act

Maharashtra Government gave its approval to the draft bill on the law prohibiting attacks on journalists. Freelance journalists and journalists working on contract are also considered in the bill.

 The bill was approved by the state cabinet on Thursday evening. Attackers will be penalised a fine of Rs 50,000 or 3-year jail term. Attackers will have to pay for the damage and the medical bill. 

Misuse of the law by the journalists would also attract punishments. The bill will be introduced in the ongoing budget session. The bill will be tabled in both the houses of the State legislature.
