Poonam Mahajan, the daughter of late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan, is contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Mumbai North-Central constituency. Mahajan (38) is the sitting MP from the same constituency and is fielded yet again by BJP and Shiv Sena alliance.
Earlier, during the 2014 general elections, Mahajan was able to defeat Congress candidate Priya Dutt by a margin of 1.86 lakh votes. Known as the “youth face” of the BJP, Mahajan has also served as the President of Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJPYM). The young BJP leader has also been awarded the ‘Best Parliamentarian’ prize.
After her primary education, Mahajan moved to the USA along with her brother for further studies. In 2012, Mahajan got a diploma in a leadership course. Moreover, in 2016, she was given a pilot certificate after completing 300 hours of flying.
Born in Mumbai, Mahajan is the daughter of late Pramod Mahajan who was a prominent leader of the BJP. Earlier in 2006, Pramod Mahajan was murdered by his own brother Pravin Mahajan due to some major family dispute. Poonam Mahajan’s brother Rahul Mahajan is also a famous Television personality who has been seen on several reality shows.
After her father’s death, Poonam Mahajan stepped into politics and joined BJP. Gopinath Munde, who was closely related to Pramod Mahajan, encouraged Poonam Mahajan to join active politics. In the year 2006, during Maharashtra assembly elections, Mahajan contested the election from Ghatkopar assembly constituency against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Ram Kadam. However, Mahajan lost the seat.
Under the Modi wave, during the 2014 general elections, Mahajan managed to defeat Congress’ star candidate Priya Dutt with a huge margin of votes.
The young BJP candidate is often seen participating in various campaigns for social change. Mahajan worked extensively on the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan campaign. Along with this, Mahajan has raised her voice regarding sexual harassment crimes against women.
BJP has named Poonam Mahajan to contest LS poll from Mumbai North-Central constituency against Congress’ Priya Dutt. The fight between both the contenders seems tough as they both carry a legacy behind their names. Mahajan has escalated her campaign ahead of the polling date.
