The Congress on Tuesday accused the BJP-led Mahayuti government of attempting to deplete the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) fixed deposits, alleging that funds belonging to Mumbai's citizens are being systematically spent without ensuring corresponding improvements in civic infrastructure.
The party claimed that the BMC's fixed deposits, which once stood at INR 91,000 crore, have fallen to INR 77,000 crore at the beginning of the current financial year. According to Congress, the deposits have declined by INR 4,000 crore compared to the previous financial year, with funds being withdrawn to finance various infrastructure projects.
Mumbai Congress spokesperson and media coordinator Sureshchandra Rajhans alleged that the BJP-led Mahayuti government is treating the BMC as a "breeding ground for corruption" and is continuously draining public funds.
"The BJP did not spare even Lord Ram, so what chance does the Mumbai Municipal Corporation have?" Rajhans said while launching a sharp attack on the ruling alliance.
He further alleged that the government's ultimate objective is to exhaust the entire INR 91,000 crore in fixed deposits, leaving the civic body financially weakened.
"The BJP government is a government of looters. From Delhi to the grassroots, it is exploiting every opportunity to siphon public money. It did not even spare the donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. How can the BMC be an exception?" Rajhans alleged.
He asserted that the fixed deposits belong to the people of Mumbai and are not the BJP's "party fund." Despite spending thousands of crores of rupees, he claimed that Mumbai residents continue to face poor road conditions, inadequate access to clean drinking water, and insufficient healthcare services.
Rajhans also accused the government of attempting to undermine the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, alleging that efforts were underway to weaken and privatise the public transport utility.
The BJP has not yet responded to the latest allegations.
