An incident reported in the evening on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, stated that NCP leader Sanjay Shinde had passed away after his car short-circuited in Nashik. It is said that he was burnt alive as the car caught fire near the Pimpalgaon Baswant toll plaza.

Villagers and people nearby added that a hand sanitiser kept in the car caught fire due to a spark, which then spread, eventually activating the central locking system. The doors were then jammed and Shinde could not escape despite several attempts to break the window.

Fire brigade, rescue teams and the Police were immediately informed, and the local tried their best to save him. Officials identified him as the NCP leader only after the fire was doused.

The incident occurred while travelling to Pimpalgaon, on the Mumbai-Agra Highway, to buy pesticides for his orchard. He was popular among the wine traders and the community of grape exporters from Nashik.
