During the first general body meeting of the newly formed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), corporators from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction staged a walkout, exposing visible cracks within their alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
The special session was held to conduct the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Tensions rose when the municipal commissioner was appointed as the presiding officer for the meeting, a move strongly opposed by the Shiv Sena (Thackeray) group, which claimed the decision was procedurally improper.
When their objections were not accepted, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections proceeded. During the Deputy Mayor’s speech, Shiv Sena (Thackeray) corporators tore up copies of the speech and walked out of the hall, raising slogans in protest.
In contrast, MNS corporators did not join the protest and remained in the house until the session concluded. Some MNS leaders later indicated that they were not informed beforehand about any plan to stage a walkout.
The incident has raised questions about coordination and unity within the Thackeray–MNS alliance, which had come together for the civic elections. The events of the first session have sparked speculation about how stable this partnership will remain in the coming term of the BMC.
