According to the latest reports, JJ Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday, May 19 saw the first case of organ donation since the coronavirus pandemic.
Based on accounts, advocate Reena Bansode (43) was admitted to the hospital under Dr Vernon Velho, HOD Neurosurgery Department on May 15. Later, on May 18 at 10.38 pm she was declared brain dead by a team of doctors.
It has been reported that Social Services Superintendents of JJ Hospital counselled the patient's relatives about organ donation. Following a positive from them, Dean, Dr Pallavi Saple, Medical Superintendent, Dr Sanjaay Surase and the medical officer's team promptly commenced the organ donation process.
Bansode donated several organs including the likes of her kidney, heart, small intestine and cornea. JJ Hospital was quoted in a narrative by the news agency ANI elaborating on how in accordance with the rules and regulations of ZTCC, the organs were given to the needy patients of Global Hospital, JJ Hospital, Kokilaben Hospital and Nanavati Hospital.
The hospital authority added that this was the first time in the city that the small intestine donation took place successfully. The authority brought to light that the patient who received the small intestine is doing well post-surgery.
According to the authority, this organ donation drive is the first in any public hospital in the city post the COVID-19 pandemic.
