On Wednesday, February 23, Maharashtra Minister of Higher Education and Technical Education, Uday Samant took to Twitter saying that 1200 students from the state are stuck in Ukraine owing to the warlike condition between Ukraine and Russia.

Samant requested urgent intervention to safely bring back these students to Maharashtra. He added that pupils from the state are stuck in Ukraine owing to the non-availability of flight amongst other resources.

Moreover, in a statement released by the state Chief Minister’s (CM) Secretariat, it was highlighted that the citizens of Maharashtra are stranded in Ukraine and thus the CM has given them instructions to coordinate with the Centre regarding the security.

In view of the war situation in Ukraine, the authorities should coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs to understand what arrangements are being made for the citizens of Maharashtra who are stranded in Ukraine and to bring them back safely, highlighted the press release.

The CM also asked the administration to give priority to students, especially those from the state who are in Ukraine. In the wake of the invasion, the CM has expressed concern over the safety of people who have gone from Maharashtra for industry, education and business purposes. Thus, he has instructed the Chief Secretary to coordinate with the Central Government and keep in touch with them.

Due to the increasing tension, the Government of India has begun bringing students living in Ukraine back home, however now the air space is reportedly closed. The Government of India has also issued a helpline number for the students residing in the Ukraine.
