In a record-breaking instance, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run Bharatratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Municipal General Hospital in Kandivali delivered 35 babies within 24 hours on August 21. Its previous record was 30.

Hospital officials said the count was recorded between 8 am on August 21 and 8 am the next day, August 22.

On a routine day, the hospital delivers about 25 babies. The increase comes as Bhagwati Hospital, another BMC's tertiary care centre in Borivali has not fully resumed services after renovation.

On that particular day, there were many referrals from surrounding facilities. Some of them were complicated cases where chances of maternal mortality were high, said Dr Ajay Gupta, the hospital's medical superintendent.

He added that all the babies and mothers were safe.

The civic-run facility caters to patients from Palghar to Malad. These are areas with limited access to healthcare.
