Mumbai has witnessed a huge demographic shift in the last 10 years. According to the 2011 census, over 9 lakh people from Mumbai have shifted to nearby areas like Panvel, Thane, Bhiwandi, Navi Mumbai, Palghar and Raigad with over 8 lakh have shifted to Thane alone.

Majority of the population was from South Mumbai and belonged to the mid-income group and they have taken up homes in the above areas as these places are experiencing rapid growth and industrialisation. The upcoming airport at Panvel has made it a hub for more business and housing projects.
There are several factories that have opened up in Boisar and Kalyan's MIDC. In Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar and Badlapur are also witnessing a paradigm shift. People from Mumbai have shifted here due to availability of more open spaces and job opportunities.
