Open spaces and garden are a rare sight in these space constraint densely populated cities. China's introduction of Vertical Forests has initiated a new mindset in people of how much can be achieved in a limited space.
Vana Mahotsava is a green initiative celebrated nationwide from July 1-7 to create enthusiasm for forest conservation. Therefore the Green Thumbs from Soch Sayani group from Kandivali decided to create Vertical Gardens with a vision to turn Thakur Village greener.
With concrete structures everywhere, finding the right spot was a challenge for them until they set their eyes on vertical gutter vents. Soch Sayani then encouraged residents of the nearby societies to come forward and participate and were overwhelmed by their response. Their tasks included adopting and caring for these plants, watering them regularly, replacing the soil and adding manure whenever required.

Later, they grouped up with 4-6 members for each vent and painted over discarded oil cans, water bottles, and paint tins. Each group adapted a different theme for their pillar. Some doodled faces, flowers, abstract art and insects while others sent environmental messages. They were helped by good Samaritans who wholeheartedly donated pots, soil, and plants.
We started this as our initiative but it was really encouraging to see other citizens joining in as well. This move has not only made people aware of planting trees but also about using waste efficiently. Further, the place now looks more beautiful and clean.
With driving factors like these, they began installing their plants one after the other throughout the neighborhood. and further got a great opportunity to network with like-minded people while painting and hoisting these pots. Soon enough, these new attractions got the attention they deserved and became the talk of the town. Many gathered at these places to take selfies and share them on social media.
Receiving so much appreciation from everyone has motivated Soch Sayani to further beautify Thakur Village even more. So they proposed to continue this campaign till they cover all the gutter vents and roundabouts in Thakur Village. They've recently begun working on decorating their roundabouts with flower pots painted with Warli art and classic butterflies which shall be installed soon.
They further urged every neighborhood to adapt this model and beautify their vicinities in a hope to wake up to the sound of songbirds, fluttering butterflies and beautiful flowers.
