The water taxi services between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai which resumed in February this year, will also have a halt at the Gateway of India after monsoon.

Officials said that once the services resume after monsoon, around September, passengers would be able to board and alight from water taxi at the Gateway of India, officials said.

With monsoon just a few days away, the water taxi service between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai was stopped on Wednesday, May 25.

This development comes in a bid to attract more ridership following a lukewarm response on the sea route due to issues like lack of feeder services from DCT. Moreover, it will now be possible to implement as the MbPT recently gave permission to the MMB and private operators to run services between Gateway of India and Belapur jetty.

Confirming the same, officials from the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) said that passengers will be able to board and alight from water taxi at the Gateway of India after the monsoon, except for days marked by inclement weather.

According to reports, the DCT-Belapur route received no response and could not complete a single ferry. However, the Belapur-Elephanta route received a positive response and saw completion of 320 trips and 3,299 passengers, according to a private operator.

For those unversed, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced the water taxi service on February 17. The services were planned to shorten the commute time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
