Mumbai: BEST Drops Plan to Cut Popular Gateway Bus Routes A-112 & A-116 After Opposition

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has decided not to reduce services on its popular A-112 and A-116 bus routes, which are widely used by commuters and tourists every day.

The proposal was discussed during a BEST committee meeting on Monday. However, after opposition from members across political parties, the plan has been kept on hold for now.

Both bus routes connect Gateway of India with Ahilyabai Holkar Chowk and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). A large number of passengers travelling to Elephanta, Mandwa, Uran, and Alibaug through ferry services depend on these bus routes.

According to BEST officials, around 436 bus trips operate daily on these routes, serving nearly 24,000 passengers and generating about INR 1.17 lakh in daily revenue. On Sundays and public holidays, the number rises to around 598 trips with nearly 28,000 passengers using the services.

Why Was the Proposal Made?

It was reported that Rahul Narwekar had raised concerns over traffic congestion near the Gateway of India and suggested relocating the bus stop near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

Following this, BEST proposed shifting the final stop to Dr Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Chowk, located around half a kilometre away. However, committee members opposed the move, stating that direct bus connectivity to the Gateway area is essential for commuters and tourists. Officials also noted that the routes are important from a revenue perspective.

Members of Shiv Sena (UBT) alleged that if the proposal had been approved, it would have benefited private share taxi operators.BEST committee chairperson Trushna Vishwasrao said the proposal would be sent back to the administration for reconsideration. As of now, there will be no changes to the A-112 and A-116 bus routes.
