Central Railway to survey the ghats using drones

The Central Railway now will deploy drones to capture the visuals of the ghat section where landslides are considered as a possibility due to loose rocks which can endanger the safety of train operations during the rains.

Meanwhile, the CR will conduct a survey from Mumbai to Pune and Karjat to Kasara — which is considered as an accident-prone area due to landslides — using drones, said Sanjay Kumar Jain, Regional Manager of Central Railway. He said this is the first time when CR will be using drones for pre-monsoon work on the railways in Mumbai and survey the ghat section.

CR will be inviting tenders to hire the technology which is expected to cost between ₹3,000 and ₹4,000 per km. Jain said that this is the first time that drones will be used for pre-monsoon work on the railways.

CR has also begun pre-monsoon preparation work and has identified 67 spots which are prone to water-logging.
