Due to cold temperatures at night and heat during the day, railway tracks contract and expand, often leading to cracks. On Tuesday, at 7:32 am, a crack was detected on the down slow line between Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg. As a result, services on the down slow line were halted, affecting thousands of commuters. Local trains were backed up one after another on the route.
Train schedules towards Kalyan and Thane were severely disrupted, causing major inconvenience to passengers. Students, office-goers, workers, and small business owners faced delays in reaching their destinations. With slow-line services suspended, several trains were diverted to the fast line, causing some services to skip their regular slow-line stations.
Passenger inconvenience
Once Central Railway officials and staff were informed, down slow-line trains were diverted to the fast line from Matunga. This affected both up and down services between CSMT and Kalyan. Repair teams began work immediately, and the track was restored by 7:58 am. However, passengers on the CSMT–Kalyan slow corridor had already faced significant hardship due to prolonged service unavailability. Many expressed frustration with the railway administration.
Speed restrictions slow down trains
As a precaution between Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg, a speed limit of 30 km/h was imposed from 8 am onward. This further slowed services, resulting in additional delays compared to normal schedules.
