Maharashtra: Now, E-rickshaws to be a mode of commute in Matheran?

In a latest development, Matheran Monitoring Committee has decided to start e-rickshaws in the hill station.

This decision has been taken in a recently held meeting of the nine-member monitoring committee headed by Mahendra Kalyankar.

At this meeting it was decided to start e-rickshaw as a pilot project and for this, three different models of e-rickshaws will be operated for three months.

The Maharashtra urban development department, pollution control board and environmental experts have also agreed to it.

Moreover, with this, the youth of Matheran will soon be free from the yoke of inhumane practices that have been going on for hundreds of years. Apart from that, it will help the hill station to be pollution-free.

“There are many ups and downs in Matheran. As a result, three types of rickshaws will be operated here for three months. Earlier, Matheran was eco-sensitive. This initiative is to keep the hill station pollution free. Therefore, permission would be sought from the Supreme Court and only then the pilot project of e-rickshaw will start at this place,” said Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar, Collector-Raigad and Secretary-Matheran Monitoring Committee.

Sunil Shinde, secretary of the Retired Teachers and Workers Rickshaw Association, had filed a petition in the Mumbai High Court seeking environment-friendly transport in Matheran. Following which, the court had directed the monitoring committee to discuss the issue with the petitioner Sunil Shinde.
