Mumbai’s metro network is gradually taking shape with the partial opening of five new lines this year end or the start of 2026. Under this, metro lines 2B, 3, 4A, 6 and 9 are being developed across the city’s eastern suburbs.

The state government is speeding up construction on all metro projects. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated earlier this year that the goal is to complete all metro work in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by 2027.

Here's all you need to know about the upcoming routes:

Metro Line 2B

Launch Date: End of 2025

Route: Mandale to Diamond Garden [5 of the total 20 stations]

Budget: INR 10,986 crore

Phase 1 of the Yellow Line 2B, covering 5.4 km, from Mandale to Diamond Garden, started trial runs in April 2025. The entire corridor will be opened in phases between 2026 and 2027. Modern six-coach BEML trains will operate on this fully elevated line. The corridor will improve east-west connectivity across key areas, including Bandra, Kurla, Chembur, and Mankhurd.

On September 10, 2025, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety began the final inspection of the Mandale-Diamond Garden segment.

Metro Line 9 Phase 1

Launch Date: End of 2025 [4 of the total 8 stations]

Route: Dahisar East to Kashigaon

Budget: INR 6,607 Crores (Combined budget of Line 9 and 7A)

The Red Line, connecting Dahisar East to Kashigaon in Phase 1, began technical inspection and trial runs on May 14, 2025, led by CM Fadnavis. The full corridor extending to Mira-Bhayander is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. Line 9 links to Metro Lines 7 and 7A.

The route is 13.58 km long, with 11.386 km elevated and 2.195 km underground. Line 9 will cut travel from Mira-Bhayander to Andheri East from 75–90 minutes to about 35–50 minutes.

Metro Line 4A

Launch Date: End of 2025

Route: Cadbury Junction-Gaimukh [10 of the total 34 stations]

Budget: INR 16,000 crore (Cost of complete corridor)

Green Line 4A began trial runs on September 22, 2025. The trial run covers the 10.5 km Cadbury Junction-Gaimukh segment. CM Fadnavis said the full Metro 4 corridor, from Wadala to Kasarvadavali, will be completed by the end of 2026. The full 32.3 km corridor will include a depot on 45 acres in Mogarpada to serve Metro routes 10, 11, 11A, and 4A.

Metro Line 3

Launch Date: September 30, 2025

Route: Acharya Atre Chowk (Worli) to Cuffe Parade

Budget: INR 37,276 crore

The Aqua Line, also called Metro Line 3, is Mumbai’s first fully underground corridor. The final phase of the line, from Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli to Cuffe Parade, is scheduled for launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This project marks the end of a 15-year plan.

A trip from Cuffe Parade to Aarey will take 54 minutes instead of 90 to 100 minutes during peak hours. Fares will range from INR 10 to INR 70, much lower than taxi fares exceeding INR 700 for similar distances.

Metro Line 6

Launch Date: 2026

Route: Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) to Vikhroli

Budget: INR 6,716 crore

The Pink Line 6 is nearly complete. This 15.31 km elevated corridor runs along the Eastern Express Highway. The line has 13 stations and will reduce travel time along JVLR by 30 to 45 minutes.
