Mumbai Metro Lines 2A, 7, 2B and 9 Drive MMRDA Ridership to 30 Crore Passenger Journeys

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority have achieved a historic milestone with 300 million (30 crore) passenger journeys on the MMRDA Metro network comprising Metro Line 2A (Dahisar East– Andheri west), Metro Line 7 (Dahisar East–Gundavali), Metro Line 2B Phase 1 (Diamond Garden–Mandale) and Metro Line 9 Phase 1 (Dahisar East–Kashigaon).

The landmark was achieved on August 3, 2026, reflecting the ever-growing confidence of Mumbaikars in Metro as a fast, safe, reliable and sustainable mode of public transport.

This achievement is particularly significant as the latest 50 million passenger journeys were recorded in just 179 days—the fastest since the network became operational. The average daily ridership addition has increased to nearly 2.79 lakh passenger journeys per day, compared to 2.70 lakh during the previous milestone, registering a 3.35% growth despite weekends, holidays and seasonal travel patterns.

On the achievement, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Thirty crore passenger journeys are not merely a number, they represent 30 crore votes of confidence by the people of Mumbai in our vision for a modern, efficient and sustainable public transport system. Every Metro journey reflects a conscious shift towards faster, safer and cleaner mobility. As we continue to expand Metro connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, we are laying the foundation of a globally competitive Mumbai where seamless public transport will define the quality of urban life. I congratulate MMRDA, every member of the Metro team for their unwavering commitment to delivering safe and seamless Metro services."

Since its inauguration on April 2, 2022, the MMRDA Metro network has recorded remarkable and sustained growth in ridership, reflecting the increasing public preference for fast, reliable, and efficient Metro-based transportation.

The commissioning of Metro Line 2B (Phase 1) and Metro Line 9 (Phase 1) on 7 April 2026, which added nine new stations to the network, has further enhanced connectivity and played a significant role in accelerating ridership growth.

The ridership trend highlights the increasing public preference for Metro-based mobility:

• The latest 50 million passenger journeys (from 250 million to 300 million) were recorded in just 179 days, the fastest such achievement since the network began operations.
• The average daily ridership addition has increased to 2.79 lakh passenger journeys, up from 2.70 lakh during the previous milestone period.
• Daily ridership growth has risen by 3.33% compared to the previous milestone.
• Compared with the 100–150 million passenger journey phase, the current average daily ridership is more than 23% higher, demonstrating sustained growth in Metro usage.
• Since reaching the first 5 million passenger journeys, the average daily ridership addition has increased by nearly 9.4 times, underscoring the rapid and continued adoption of the Metro network by commuters.
• The opening of Metro Line 2B (Phase 1) and Metro Line 9 (Phase 1) has further strengthened the network, expanded accessibility, and contributed significantly to the continued rise in ridership.
