The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has activated a comprehensive monsoon preparedness plan across Metro Lines 2A, 2B, 7, and 9 to ensure safe and uninterrupted services during the rainy season.

With Metro Lines 2B and 9 experiencing their first monsoon since becoming operational, MMRDA has implemented a range of technology-driven measures to tackle challenges posed by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and adverse weather conditions.

As part of the preparedness plan, extensive arrangements have been made at metro stations, depots, viaducts, and other critical infrastructure to enhance passenger safety, prevent waterlogging, strengthen emergency response systems, and protect key assets.

A network of 2,496 CCTV cameras has been deployed across the four metro corridors for continuous monitoring. Additionally, 30 emergency pumps have been positioned at vulnerable locations prone to water accumulation.

Authorities have also completed the cleaning of drains and stormwater channels at stations, depots, and along viaducts to ensure smooth water discharge during heavy rains. Preventive maintenance has been carried out on 1,070 electrical insulators, while key systems including 25 kV cables, pantographs, transformers, current transformers, and lightning arresters have undergone inspections and servicing. Flood protection measures at traction substations have also been strengthened.

To monitor weather conditions in real time, anemometers have been installed at 14 critical stations across the network to measure wind speed and support operational decision-making during severe weather events.

MMRDA has also introduced advanced AI-based technologies to improve safety and operational efficiency. An AI-enabled Automated Pantograph Condition Monitoring System on Metro Lines 2A and 7 uses high-speed cameras and artificial intelligence to inspect pantographs in real time, helping detect faults quickly and enabling predictive maintenance. The system has significantly reduced inspection time from around 30 minutes to just a few seconds.

To deal with unforeseen disruptions, five reserve metro trains have been kept on standby, including three on operational corridors and two at depots. Special metro coaches have also been earmarked to transport emergency equipment and support municipal disaster management teams if required.

MMRDA officials expressed confidence that the measures will help maintain safe, reliable, and uninterrupted metro operations throughout the monsoon season.
