Mumbai rains are quite unpredictable but waterlogging on railway tracks is quite bound to happen every year as monsoon commences in the city. In order to avoid waterlogging, it definitely is the responsibility of Railways to clear the garbage on the railway tracks whereas it is the municipal corporation’s duty to clear the nullahs. The garbage accumulates water which results in waterlogging. Now instead of cleaning the garbage, Railways and BMC tend to play the blame game.
Railway Board Chairman, Ashwani Lohani held a press conference in Mumbai on Monday, June 18. While reviewing the work of Railways so far, he addressed the problem of garbage on tracks and said that, “There is no need to convey whose responsibility it is to pick up the garbage. Had BMC done their work properly, then the problem would have been solved for good.”
Saying this, he completely held the civic body responsible for the work. The issue of garbage collection will possibly create disturbance between the railway authorities and BMC.
Since the first rain and every rain after that, the railway services would get disrupted in some manner every time. Even moderate rainfall would leave the railway tracks waterlogged and the primary reason was unpaid attention towards garbage on the tracks and uncleaned crevices.
Central Railway General Manager, D.K. Sharma claimed that 90 per cent of the trains on the Central line are always on time. The Central Railways faces a daily disruption in some form or other and in such circumstances, how is it possible that 90 per cent trains running on time?
