Navi Mumbai Metro: Line 2, Connecting Taloja-Khandeshwar, Finally Gets State Approval After 15 Long Years

The Maharashtra government has approved the second corridor of the Navi Mumbai Metro network, after 15 years of first proposal by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The project received funding of INR 5,575 crore in the state budget.

The new corridor is called Navi Mumbai Metro Line 2 and will run between Taloja and Khandeshwar. It will be 8.15 kilometres long and will include eight stations along the route. According to the original plan from 2011, the project was expected to cost about INR 1,605 crore. However, the estimated cost has now increased to INR 5,575 crore.

Eight stations are planned along the corridor. These include:

1. Khandeshwar

2. Sector 10 Kamothe

3. Sector 2E Kamothe

4. Sector 7E Kalamboli

5. Sector 13 Kalamboli

6. Kalamboli Kasadi

7. MIDC Station 1

8. MIDC Station 2

The metro line will improve connectivity in Kamothe, Kalamboli, Taloja, Khandeshwar, and the MIDC industrial area. These areas have seen increasing development in recent years. The new line will provide better internal transport within Navi Mumbai and improve daily travel for residents.

The line is also planned to connect with the existing Belapur–Pendhar metro corridor. However, a gap of around 2.2 kilometres currently remains between the two lines. The state government still needs to approve the merger of this missing link. Another proposed extension may add a two-kilometre spur line that will connect the metro corridor directly to the Navi Mumbai International Airport corridor.
