BEST to introduce single-ticket to avail various transport services

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has decided to introduce a single ticket which can be used to travel on various transport services in Mumbai.

Moreover, the 'One Nation, One Card' scheme was supposed to be implemented on an experimental basis five months ago. However, the card in the scheme is still undergoing technical testing. The card will enable the passenger to avoid the need to stand in line to get a travel ticket and avoid cash transactions which can prove to be beneficial especially amidst the pandemic.

In addition, the 'One Nation, One Card' card can be used to access the BEST bus, train, metro and monorail. Testing of the hardware for the card began in October 2020 at the Colaba and Wadala depots. After this, it is to be tested on the bus as well. For this, 5-10 employees of BEST will be given this card.

On the other hand, the BEST pending electricity bills in Mumbai have crossed the INR 100 crores mark due to the coronavirus-infused lockdown. Moreover, several consumers are reportedly yet to pay their bills since April last year.

According to reports, the BEST has given repeated reminders, besides introducing two new schemes a few months back to waive delayed payment charges and interest on arrears. Moreover, it offered three month-instalments to those with high bills between Colaba/Cuffe Parade and Sion/Mahim. Currently, BEST plans to authorize notices for disconnecting supply if payments are not made on time.
