In a report by a think tank organisation, Mumbai Vikas Samiti (MVS), it was recently found out that around 51 per cent of the total trips from home to workplace during peak hours consist of pedestrians outnumbering commuters by bus/auto rickshaw/taxi.
The organisation came up with the report last week and since then, they have been demanding that the traffic police must emphasise on being responsible for the pedestrians along with the vehicular movements. A V Shenoy, a member and transport expert at MVS stated that the needs of pedestrians must be met for a transportation plan to become successful.

Meanwhile, the report suggested that the use of bicycles around the city must be promoted and also hinted the potential areas for the plan such as BKC, Nariman Point, Ballard Estate or Fort and asked BMC to set up a cycling cell that would be monitored by cycling enthusiasts.
More importantly, the survey displayed that most of the public transport journeys (60 per cent approx.) began and ended in walking. Further, it added that most commuters preferred BEST buses or autos/taxis after a train travel but the number of pedestrians easily outnumbered them all.
