As normal life was disrupted with continual rains lashing the city, the BMC has pumped out all the excess water off the streets in approximately twelve hours.

With the incessant rainfall, a lot of low lying areas in Mumbai had been submerged. Therefore, Mumbai’s civic body took to the streets to ensure that the water is pumped out in order to ensure that the people can travel safely. Moreover, Aaditya Thackeray, the Shiv Sena leader, lauded the employees of the BMC for working tirelessly amidst the monsoons.

Aaditya Thackeray along with Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had earlier reviewed the overall situation of the municipality during the torrential rains in Mumbai. The young Sena leader had also instructed the BMC to take several necessary measures including the rapid drainage of water in low lying areas.

In the areas of Dadar and Dharavi, 332 mm of rainfall was witnessed in just 12 hours. As a result, a large amount of water was stored in low lying areas. In such a situation, the employees of the corporation, with the help of a pump pumped out as much water as the Tulsi lake which supplies water to the entire city of Mumbai. Approximately, six to seven thousand million litres of water has been pumped out.

According to sources, the Brimstowad project for flood management in Mumbai has increased the capacity of the existing system. However, the problem of water conservation during the monsoons is still arising every year. As per reports, the BMC is also considering suggestions to create underground water storage facilities at open spaces and stadiums. With the city experiencing at least 3-4 days of rains above 150 mm in a few hours annually, the civic body will have to come up with more long term solutions for dewatering to avoid a repeat of the 2005 floods which had shaken the city to the core.
