Mumbai surpasses seasonal rain average; records more than 400 mm rainfall

Skymet forecast report stated that the rainfall will continue in Mumbai and suburbs on Wednesday, September 23 and will subside by Thursday, September 24, 2020.

Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall in the evening and night on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, and as per records, the city has received 286.4 mm of rainfall. Reports state that the overnight rains witnessed in the city have broken a 26-year record, wherein Mumbai has received such excessive rainfall for the first time in 26 years.

Data reveals that this marks the fourth-highest rainfall in 24 hours in September, i.e.1974-2020. Heavy rains lashed the city and suburbs from Tuesday night until early hours in the morning on Wednesday, September 23, 2020. This torrential rainfall has caused waterlogging in many places, affecting the traffic on roads and the Mumbai local train schedule.

Skymet forecast report stated that multiple weather systems were responsible for heavy downpour over Mumbai and suburbs. A cyclonic circulation has been persisting over the North coast of Maharashtra, the east-west shear zone is also running in the close proximity of Mumbai. The low pressure area over East Madhya Pradesh has a pull effect on monsoon surge over the west coast.

During the last 24 hours, until 08:30 hours on Wednesday, Santacruz observatory of Mumbai has recorded 286.4 mm rain and Colaba recorded 148 mm of rain. Many other suburbs of Mumbai also witnessed heavy downpour during the night.

Until date, Mumbai has already surpassed its seasonal rain average in the month of September. The monthly average rainfall for Mumbai for the month of September is 341.4 mm. Until today, Mumbai has recorded more than 400 mm of rain.

Furthermore, rain activities over Mumbai and suburbs will continue until Wednesday night, however, one should not expect the weather conditions of Tuesday. Having said that Skymet stated that heavy spells are anticipated during the afternoon, evening, and night hours. Rain activities over Mumbai and suburbs will subside by Thursday, September 24, 2020, as the rain activities will shift to the north. The next 24 hours are crucial and mumbaikars are advised to remain indoors until tomorrow morning.
