On July 3, 2018, around 7:40 am, a part of Gokhale bridge collapsed on the railway track between Andheri and Vile Parle disrupting Western Railway services. After which, the railway authorities realised that the bridge was damaged and decided to repair it.
Now, 11 months after the repair work began, Gokhale bridge has finally been left open for public use from Sunday morning.

The repair work had begun after Western Railways had undertaken a safety audit of Gokhale bridge with IIT-Bombay's help. The work consisted of major repairs and strengthening work of the bridge.
Meanwhile, the Chief Public Relations Officer for Western Railways, Ravinder Bhakar said that the entire work involved dismantling of 3.3m wide cantilever old slab on both South and North carriageway. The project was carried out at a cost of ₹3.34 crore.
“While carrying out this work, special care had been taken in respect of durability of the structure by choice of materials like using stainless steel which is corrosion resistant and design detailing like reduced cantilever, rich concrete mix and lesser inaccessible parts making inspections easier,” said Bhakar.
