Despite the plastic ban announcement made on June 18, milk pouches are still being sold in the market, generating tonnes of waste. Addressing the same in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, State Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam said that majorly all the plastic comes from the other states with over 80 per cent from Gujarat. ,
Ramdas Kadam further added that there will not be a complete ban on plastic and local dairies will have to pay 50 paise if the customer returns the pouch. The state was generating 1,200 tonnes of plastic waste and as per reports, this has reduced by 50 per cent post ban.
With 24 plastic manufacturing companies, Maharashtra generates 550 tonnes of plastic daily. Discussing more about the legally permissible quantity, he said that 3000 tonnes of plastic is allowed for cement companies. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that this issue will be further addressed but as of now there will be a ban on their use in one month.
