While hearing a petition, Bombay High Court was informed that there are three ‘Nasha Mukti’ (De-Addiction) centres running for the street children at Hospitals including Nair, JJ, and Sion. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was replying to the petition when it revealed the information.
While hearing the petition which sought rehabilitation policies for the street children by the civic body and Maharashtra government, Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice MS Karnik said that the needs and problems of these children should be catered in a humane manner.
Under National Urban Livelihood Missions, the central government grants financial help to BMC through registered NGOs for the welfare of the street children. The funds are regulated and monitored by Maharashtra government Nagar Palika Sanchalan’s secretary. The government body ensures that the funds are being wholly utilised to benefit the children.

BMC also informed that it has written to Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and Airport Authority for authorising funds to build shelter home in the city for the deprived street children. There are almost 37,000 street children in Mumbai, as of 2013. The court will hear the matter on January 16.
