A 52-year-old woman died due to coronavirus on Sunday, April 12, at Kasturba Hospital. She was a Worli resident and was a Sanitation worker's (safai worker) wife. Her family has alleged her death has been caused due to the negligence of the hospital authorities.

Sharing more information, they said that for more than 24 hours after she was admitted, the hospital staff did not pay attention and left her lying in soiled clothes. Further, she was not provided with hot water to drink and only these concerns were brought to their notice repeatedly, the hospital staff took this into consideration. However, she passed away on Sunday during her treatment.

Her daughter said that her mother was unable to digest food and would throw up anything she would consume. She had also complained of not being able to breathe and despite such issues, the hospital did not pay heed to her mother's condition.

The patient tested negative in her first test but by the time her results turned positive, her condition had worsened to an extent that she had to be admitted for intensive care. Before she had contracted the virus, her husband, who was assigned duty at Dharavi was tested positive. The virus also infected the worker's son-in-law who is admitted to the PWD hospital in Andheri. Meanwhile, the daughter and two other children tested negative.

The family claims that if the doctors had taken her condition seriously and had they started treatment immediately, she could have survived.

However, talking to Mumbai Mirror, Dr Chandrakant Pawar, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital denied the allegations. He said that the patient was attended by a specialist from Nair Hospital and if the family thought there was negligence, they should have asked for a post-mortem.
