The Railways have been ordered by the consumer court to pay a compensation of ₹19,000 to a lawyer who had spotted a rat on the Mumbai-Ernakulam Duronto Express.

Back in 2015, Advocate Shital Kanakia and her relative Hema Kanakia, had knocked the consumer court’s door and filed a suit against the Railways over spotting a rat on the train. The court has now ordered the Railways to pay the lawyer a compensation of ₹19,000.

The complainant said that the Railways dismissed her grievances even though she wrote to the Ticket Checker. She was told that it is common to find rats on the trains and that the sanitation workers only get a three-day window to clean the entire train.

The court also rebuked the Railways saying that it failed to submit the documents of record while the complainant came forth with all the required evidence.
