As an attempt to counter the issues caused due to long shifts, Railways has decided to cut down the work hours of its 140 Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel. Railways has reduced the shift working hours to eight hours from 12 hours May 1 onwards.
The GRP staff strength in the city and suburbs has been stagnant since 1982, i.e. 3,700 GRP personnel. Accordingly, every one GRP constable is accountable for 2,193 commuters. As per the statistics, the number of commuters travelling on Mumbai trains has increased to 80 lakh in 2017.
Commissioner of GRP, Niket Kaushik said that the move has been initiated as an experiment and accordingly, they had decided to bring three shifts instead of two shifts. Earlier, there were two 12-hour shifts but since April 1, there were three shifts of two eight-hour shifts and one ten-hour shift.
He further added that now the experiment will be extended to Karjat and later throughout the state. He assured that the entire process will be conducted, without compromising the safety of passengers.
