In what may become a major upgrade for public transport in India, Mumbai is likely to become the first Indian city to implement the 'One Nation One Card' policy. Earlier, the announcement about the scheme was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inauguration of Ahmedabad Metro in March.
According to sources, a joint meeting of several ministries in Delhi decided to make Mumbai as the location for the pilot project. The development comes after the city has been working towards developing the Integrated Transport System (ITS).
The city’s various transport operators like the Railways and the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST), along with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had been working on developing the ITS for over a year.

Reportedly, MMRDA had floated tenders for the implementation of the umbrella system of the ITS along with the rights to provide the travel card. Meanwhile, it is said that all the banks can be banking partners for the One Nation One Card scheme.
