When the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) ruling corporators started backing tainted contractors who have been blacklisted for adding debris in the garbage to increase weight, the latter have threatened that they will not pick up the garbage from January 27 after giving a 14-day notice.
The civic body had told the contractors to continue till a new deal is in place after the term of the previous contract ended last year. The civic officials added that when they invited tenders for the second time, mostly tainted contractors participated and so the civic body decided to continue to work.
The deadline for the contractors to collect waste and disposing of it in the dumping ground was terminated on December 24. But as inviting new tenders is underway so the BMC decided to extend the deadline of old contractors.
In the last standing committee meeting, all the party members backed the contractors as not guilty as they only provide vehicle and diesel. The BMC workers are the ones who empty the garbage in the dumping ground. Saying this, the party members asked the BMC to withdraw the notices.
After this, the contractors wrote to the BMC commissioner on January 13, 2017, asking to withdraw the notice. If they fail to do so, they will not pick up garbage January 27 onwards.
According to sources, the BMC will likely slap a fine of ₹1 lakh and then withdraw the notice. There are chances that the civic body will invite tenders but will not allow tainted and blacklisted Global Waste company to fill a tender.
