The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had filed complaints against companies for mixing up debris with solid waste to show increased weight. However, it seems, that the BMC has hired the same companies. The contract of the existing companies is getting expired by December 24 but as new contractors have not been hired, the civic body is planning to extend the deadline of the existing companies for six more months for which ₹150 Cr will be spent. Along with this, one more tainted company is also included which was blacklisted for messing up in nullah cleaning project.
Additional commissioner, Vijay Singhal, received several complaints of contractors mixing debris with solid waste to increase weight. He then videographed the process of dumpers unloading the garbage in collection stations and the officials detected the malpractice. 10 such companies were found guilty and a police complaint was filed.
As the deadline for the contract is December 27, 2017, the civic body is inviting new tenders and till the tenders are finalised, the period of existing contracts will be extended and the same will be discussed in a standing committee meeting.
According to sources, current companies charge ₹7,000-₹7,500 per round but as per the new contracts, around ₹5,000-₹5,500 will be charged. Considering this difference, BMC is still hiring the same companies.
When Mumbai Live contacted Vijay Singhal, Additional commissioner, he said that they are extending the contract as new companies have not been hired. He added that if they don't extend it, then there will be no one to pick up waste.
Once we assign new contractors, we will immediately stop the existing contractors and will punish guilty as well.”
