Authorities have decided to prohibit heavy vehicles from using the newly constructed “Missing Link” section of the MumbaiPune Expressway during its initial phase, aiming to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhanced safety.

The 13.3-km-long Missing Link, developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, is expected to open soon and will serve as a faster alternative to the existing ghat route.

Officials said only light motor vehicles, including cars and buses, will be permitted on the stretch initially. The restriction on heavy vehicles is intended to reduce congestion and allow authorities to monitor traffic conditions closely after the opening.

The new corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by approximately 20 to 30 minutes and shorten the distance by several kilometres. It also bypasses accident-prone sections of the current route.

Featuring tunnels and a major bridge, the Missing Link is considered a significant infrastructure upgrade. Authorities are expected to review the heavy vehicle ban after assessing operational performance and safety on the route.
