An international-standard aquarium and sea lion entertainment centre has been proposed in Panvel, with the Maharashtra government initiating steps to develop it as a major tourism and educational attraction.
The project, planned over approximately 10 acres, will include state-of-the-art aquarium facilities showcasing a wide range of marine and freshwater species, along with entertainment features such as sea lion shows aimed at drawing visitors.
The proposal was reviewed at a high-level meeting chaired by Nitesh Rane, where officials were directed to prepare a detailed and viable project plan. The facility is likely to be developed at a fisheries sub-centre under Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Agricultural University, given its suitability for marine-related infrastructure.
Authorities said the project aims not only to boost tourism in the region but also to promote environmental awareness, marine biodiversity education, and research opportunities. Considering Panvel’s proximity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, the project is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors.
Officials have been instructed to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study covering technical, environmental, and financial aspects before the project is finalised and executed.
