The Maharashtra government has decided to shift the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) from Mantralaya to the iconic Air India Building at Nariman Point as part of a broader plan to address the acute shortage of office space in the state secretariat and bring scattered government departments under one roof.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will operate from the refurbished Air India Building once renovation work is completed. The government also plans to relocate departments currently functioning from rented private premises, a move expected to save the state around INR 200 crore annually in rental expenses.
The Maharashtra government formally acquired the 22-storey Air India Building at Nariman Point for INR 1,601 crore in June 2026 after receiving Cabinet approval. The building offers around 46,470 square metres of office space and was purchased to expand the state's administrative infrastructure beyond the existing Mantralaya complex.
Before government offices move in, the landmark building will undergo extensive renovation and modernisation, including repairs to lifts, air-conditioning systems and interiors. Officials expect the refurbishment to take several months before the new offices become operational.
