Central Railway has temporarily shut down a multi-purpose food stall at Thane railway station and imposed a fine on its operator after a passenger raised concerns about unhygienic conditions through social media.

Railway officials found that it had failed to meet the prescribed standards of hygiene and cleanliness, prompting immediate action against the contractor.

Officials further stated the CR is committed to providing clean and hygienic eatables to passengers at all stations. Based on a complaint received o­n social media regarding unhygienic conditions at the multi-purpose stall located in the waiting room at Thane station, Central Railway immediately took cognizance of the matter. 

After verifying the complaint, corrective action was immediately taken against the contractor operating the stall. The stall has been sealed for a period of 7 days and also a penalty of ₹15,000 has been imposed o­n the contractor for violation of hygiene and cleanliness norms.

Central Railway reiterates its zero-tolerance policy towards unhygienic conditions at catering and commercial units. Officials also said regular inspections are being carried out across stations to ensure that food safety standards and cleanliness norms are strictly adhered to. 

Contractors found violating these standards are subject to strict penalties, including fines and temporary closure of their outlets.
